Weight Loss Research
I
Recently studies have been published that shed light on
ingredients that may help with weight loss. The highlights of these
studies are shown here.
Hoodia
Hoodia Gordonii (Hoodia), is an herb derived from a cactus-like
plant that is native to the semi-desert areas of South Africa and
Namibia. It is believed to have first been used by African Bushmen
to help stave off hunger as they crossed the African desert. It has
since been used for appetite suppressant abilities. Hoodia was even
featured on the television news show, ’60 Minutes’ when reporter
Leslie Stahl claimed that it squelched her appetite. Phytopharm Plc,
the English pharmaceutical company given the license by the South
African Council of Scientific and Industrial Research to turn hoodia
into a weight-loss product, has spent over $20 million on research,
and reports promising results on obese patients. Hoodia apparently
made the subjects feel full enough to eat only about 1000 calories
per day, with no dangerous side effects such as with the now-banned
stimulants ephedra and Phenfen.
Green Tea
Due to high consumption of green tea in many Asian countries, it has
received
a great deal of research attention in regarding its possible health
ben-
efits. Several studies released over the past few years provided
results that indicated green tea might have a positive effect on
weight loss, but the exact mechanism was not clear. A recent study
involving Thai adults received international attention when it
appeared to shed light on this topic. The results of this study
suggested that green tea might reduce body weight by increasing
energy expenditure and fat oxidation.
Brewing up several cups of green tea a day is the ideal situation;
unfortunately most of us just don’t do it. Supplementing with green
tea capsules has become a more convenient way to obtain the health
benefits that have been associated with green tea. OneLifeUSA offers
a Brabec Basics Green Tea Extract product, containing 300 mg of
green tea extract per capsule, 60 capsules per bottle, and with the
Brabec Foundation instant grant for only $ 3.49 per bottle (see the
special offer on page 5).
Omega – 3 Fatty Acids
Researchers at the University of Australia presented
the results of their study at the International Soci
ety for the Study of Fatty Acids & Lipids Congress. Interestingly
they found that those who exercised and took fish oil (rich in
omega-3’s) lost weight, while people in three other groups did not.
Those who did not lose any weight include those who exercised, but
took no fish oil, those who took sunflower oil (contains no
omega-3’s) and did not exercise, and those who took sunflower oil
and did exercise.
As if we need another health reason to consume fish oil rich in
omega-3’s! OneLifeUSA’s Something Smells Fishy is 100% heavy
metal-free salmon oil, taken only from free-swimming cold-water
salmon. 90 –easy to swallow gel caps come packaged per bottle,
priced from $ 7.45 or see the special offer on page 10.
Citrus aurantium (bitter orange)
After the ban on ephedra went into effect, bitter orange was the
first herb introduced as an ‘ephedra-free’
substitute. Several studies were published regarding bitter orange
and reviewed as a whole by Johns Hopkins school of Medicine. Their
results called the evidence supporting the use of bitter orange as a
‘promising’ aid in weight loss.
OneLifeUSA’s At Last with Hoodia and Green Tea contains bitter
orange as important ingredient. With 60 capsules in each bottle and
priced from $ 11.97 per bottle, this one formula contains all of the
important researched weight loss ingredients. Also, be sure to see
the special on this page.
Alpha Lipoic Acid
In January 2008 researchers at the University of Washington and
Oregon State University, published the results of a study in
Circulation. This study found that alpha lipoic acid supplements in
mice were associated with 40% less weight gain and lower levels of
triglycerides.
OneLifeUSA offers a Brabec Basics Alpha Lipoic Acid product,
containing 100 mg of alpha lipoic acid per capsule, 120 capsules per
bottle, and with the Brabec Foundation instant grant for only $ 3.89
per bottle (or see the special offer on this page). Food
alternatives for this nutrient are leafy green vegetables, potatoes,
and meats, but at levels far below what can be obtained through
supplementation.
While studies on rats can never be conclusively applied to humans,
other research on this valuable nutrient, has persuaded many that
supplementing with alpha lipoic acid is a good idea when trying to
lose weight. Most experts recommend 200-400 mg per day (always speak
to your health care provider before beginning any new health
routine).. |
