The Coral Controversy!
The ‘miracle cure’ Coral Calcium promoter, Bob Barefoot, has recently come
under heavy fire. The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) has charged Robert Barefoot, Shop America and others with making false and unsubstantiated claims about their products health benefits.
The complaint has been filed in federal district court stating they violated the FTC Act by falsely claiming Coral Calcium Supreme can treat or cure cancer and other diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and heart disease. This product has been marketed primarily through infomercials and the charges come as a result of a crack down on outlandish claims that have been used to market coral calcium.
The FTC charges their claims go far beyond existing scientific evidence regarding the recognized health benefits of calcium. Because of these recognized health benefits of calcium, the question being: Is calcium from coral any different from calcium from other sources?
It’s confusing because ‘Coral Calcium’ is a misnomer. Coral is made of much more than just calcium. There are 74 other minerals and elements found in coral, therefore any product labeled ‘Coral Calcium’, contains 74 other minerals and elements.
The word ‘calcium’ in coral calcium is just a buzzword used to catch consumers’ attention. What makes calcium from coral so different is not the calcium: It’s the other 74 minerals and elements of coral.
Proponents of Coral Calcium feel its benefits are unique. Interestingly, coral contains every mineral found in the human body in similar proportions. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in coral and it is also the major mineral in the human body.
Most minerals are not stable and work better in combination with other minerals. In coral there is a whole host of minerals that work synergistically together, so that the benefits of all of them, not just the calcium are realized. Those in the nutritional field who believe Coral Calcium truly has special benefits say, "It’s not just the calcium in coral, but the 74 other minerals and their specific combinations that make coral calcium a unique and powerfully effective supplement.
