A naturally
occurring sulfur compound decreased pain and improved physical
function in patients with knee arthritis, researchers report.
Methylsulfonylmethane, or MSM, has become a popular dietary
supplement, but few studies have been conducted involving
patients.
Researchers
administered MSM twice a day to 25 arthritis sufferers in a
randomized, double-blind trial for 12 weeks. The team consisted
of doctors from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine
in Tempe, Ariz., and the Arthritis Health Center in Scottsdale,
Ariz.
The patients
taking MSM reported significant decreases in pain and
improvements in their physical function, compared with a control
group taking a placebo, the researchers said.
However, no notable differences were found in stiffness or
aggregated total symptoms.
The findings
were presented last week at the annual meeting of the American
Association of Naturopathic Physicians in Phoenix.
Note: OneLife’s Joint Flex is a formula containing
the noted ingredients of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate &
MSM. This combination has proven its effectiveness as noted in
several previously published studies. This recent study from the
Arthritis Health Center is another we can add to ever growing
repertoire of science touting the benefits of OneLife’s
Joint Flex product

If you are one of the millions of arthritis sufferers who have
visited their doctor in search of relief, you most likely have been
prescribed an NSAID (Vioxx, Celebrex, ibuprofen, etc.) These drugs
have been synthetically manufactured to help alleviate the symptoms
of arthritis, but not without consequences.
Some of you are probably familiar with, and may have experienced
some of the side effects of these drugs. These can include simple
stomach upset to ulcers, kidney failure or even death. Estimates
show that approximately 16,000 deaths occur in the U.S. each year as
a direct result of NSAIDs that have caused bleeding ulcers. More
recently, research from Brigham & Women’s Hospital (a Harvard
University affiliate), suggested that Vioxx might increase the risk
of heart attack.
There are safe alternatives: Nutrients, such as glucosamine sulfate,
chondroitin sulfate, salmon oil, MSM, ester- C, green tea and
anti-oxidants that are effective for promoting joint health. Side
effects are rare, and as a matter-of-fact, studies have not shown
any serious side effects. These alternatives not only control
inflammation like NSAIDs, but some, like glucosamine sulfate,
chondroitin sulfate and green tea have shown to slow the progression
of osteoarthritis and may even repair the cartilage. Specifically
glucosamine and chondroitin sulfates have shown to work by
inhibiting enzymes that break down the joints surface.
