When we think of aging skin, the first and foremost word that comes to mind is ‘wrinkles’. However, recent research has shown that it’s actually the loss of radiance or that youthful glow that adds years to your appearance. "The luminosity of skin is dependent on how well it absorbs and reflects light," says Paul Matts, PhD, a scientist with Proctor & Gamble. For over-40 faces, the problem is caused by the breakdown of collagen fibers that mirror light back to the skin's surface, making the skin look less ‘alive’. Another issue that escalates with age is the increase of dead skin cell buildup. This and dark spots triggered by UV light also interfere with skin's light-reflective ability.
The good news is there is a simple regimen you can follow to help improve the radiance of your skin and restore a more youthful glow. The goal is to ramp up collagen production, even out skin tone and increase luster. This will improve luminosity and help diminish mild dullness and discoloration without being overly aggressive. You will probably notice a decrease in fine wrinkles as well!
There are three key elements involved: 1. Smooth skin 2. Even out tone and 3. Moisturize and protect.
1. Smooth Skin - "Sweeping away surface cells gives you a more light-reflective complexion and allows the products you'll apply next to penetrate better," says Deborah Sarnoff, MD, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at New York University School of Medicine. Using a cleanser that is also a gentle exfoliant not a gritty cleanser. If a product is too gritty, you can actually cause damage to your skin cells, or breaking small blood vessels that are very close to the skin’s surface.
2. Even Out Tone – One of the most effective ways to even out skin tone as well as help smooth out skin and remove dead skin cell build up is the use of a retinol cream. Dermatologists and plastic surgeons have been prescribing retinol creams for years – just for this purpose. Most have seen not only radiance improve, but have also seen the appearance of wrinkles decrease. Prescription retinol creams have two drawbacks: they are expensive and can be a bit harsh – causing redness and peeling. Several years ago, over-the counter retinol creams were introduced. Retinol creams are basically topical Vitamin A. The over-the-counter creams are not as strong as the prescription creams. Therefore, they rarely cause any redness or peeling. For the most part, they are not as expensive as the prescription variety. Of course, there are some over-the-counter brands that cost over $100.00 per ounce. Most studies have shown cost and effectiveness has nothing to do with one another. The best advise – stick with a brand you trust and do not overspend. One note: If you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant, you should not use a retinol cream.
3. Moisturize and Protect – Dry skin turns plump skin cells into shriveled ones. This creates the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles long before they are due. Although moisturizers cannot prevent wrinkles, they can temporarily help mask tiny lines and creases. When you are selecting your retinol cream, look for one with a moisturizing agent in it, this will help eliminate the need to purchase an additional moisturizing product. Vitamin E oil or grape seed oil are good moisturizers as well as effective anti-oxidants. Lastly, add a lightweight sunscreen that is specifically made to wear under make up. Your sunscreen selection should have a minimum of a 15 SPF.
This simple skin care regimen is affordable for everyone, both from a monetary and time standpoint. Following this routine on a daily basis, both morning and night (you don’t need the sunscreen at the night – but may want a heavier moisturizer) will leave your skin feeling and looking radiant.
