This
one is going to be hard to ignore. It seems to be important enough
to have even garnered prime news time on all of the top television
networks (NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX and CNN) – and that’s only the morning
editions. I am certain we will read and hear more as the days
progress.
Researchers have compiled over 60 studies spanning 40 years and have
basically concluded: "You may be able to avoid ovarian, colon and
breast cancers simply by getting enough vitamin D”. Cedric F.
Garland, a professor of medicine at the University of California,
San Diego points out that is the good news, however, he has also
made it clear the many of us do not get enough of this seemingly
important vitamin.
This study has already been published on the online edition of the
American Journal of Public Health and will appear in the February
2006 printed edition. It points out that those living in the
Northeast, the elderly, those who are obese, and those with black
skin are those who commonly are low in vitamin D levels. Combining
those groups means a majority of Americans are vitamin D deficient!
There is a debate as to the correct amounts one should get. Dr.
Garland, co-author of this study, recommends 1000 IU per day. Others
on the more conservative side say shoot for 400 – 700 IU per day (go
for the 700 if you fall into one of the groups who is likely to be
vitamin D deficient. ) One point both sides agree on: It is
difficult to get that much vitamin D from food alone. However, the
foods to concentrate on for vitamin D are: yogurt, milk, fortified
orange juice, and fatty fish.
That is where a little time in the sun (not to be overdone, and
apparently not achievable for those living in the Northeast) comes
into play. Then there’s a vitamin D supplement. Experts suggest
taking a good look at your Calcium supplement label – it should
contain vitamin D - if you want to absorb the calcium in the
capsule. Now the vitamin D ingredient in your calcium capsule is
even more important.
