Cancer Survivor Gives Back

Many of you, familiar with OneLifeUSA, know our founder (my mother) is a 20+ year cancer survivor, and one that was NOT given good odds.  She also founded and funded The Brabec Foundation.  

This charitable organization  is her way of 'giving back'.   It is her way of helping others incorporate the importance of good nutrition in the prevention of disease.

What is it? What does it do?      Progesterone is one of the two main female hormones and is produced in the ovaries. In the female body progesterone is made from cholesterol and is essential for proper uterine and breast development. It also plays a key role in the stress response, maintaining sugar and electrolyte balances and blood pressure regulation. As women age and go through menopause, their production of progesterone decreases, resulting in what many deem a progesterone ‘deficiency’. This decrease has been linked to the common side effects associated with menopause; hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings. A decrease in progesterone has also been linked to a woman’s loss of interest in sex, dry and wrinkly skin, water retention and depression. What are its health benefits?      Studies have shown that progesterone may provide many benefits. These include protection against fibrocystic breasts and breast cancer, protection against osteoporosis, maintaining the sex drive and normalizing blood sugar levels. Research has also indicated the importance of progesterone to the central nervous system (the brain and spinal chord) – finding levels of progesterone to be 20 times higher in brain cells than in the blood. Therefore it has been studied in benefiting brain injuries and preventing migraine headaches. Progesterone has long been studied for its calming almost sedating effect. Proper levels have been linked to sleeping well and maintaining a sense of calm. Natural vs. Synthetic      ‘Natural’ progesterone refers to the molecule that is identical in chemical structure to the progesterone in produced by the female body. Many also refer to this as ‘bioidentical’ progesterone. Currently there are two sources of ‘natural’ or bioidentical progesterone: Mexican wild yam and soy. These plants contain precursors to progesterone that can be converted through a chemical process in a laboratory into progesterone – the exact same molecule made in the human body. Be careful – contrary to popular belief, wild yam or soy CANNOT be converted into progesterone in the body. When looking for a product that contains ‘natural’ or ‘bioidentical’ it MUST say USP Progesterone on the label of that product. Synthetic progesterone known as ‘progestins’ are made chemically in a laboratory and the molecules are structurally different than the progesterone molecules produced by the body. The effects of progestins versus natural progesterone have very differing effects on the body. Progestins are found in oral contraceptive pills and are used in conventional hormone replacement therapy. Although the differences in the chemical structure of natural progesterone and synthetic progestins are slight, their effects in the body differ considerably. These two forms should NOT be considered interchangeable. Side Effects      Progesterone is a hormone. Whether in the natural or synthetic form, the inappropriate use raises concerns. A physician should be consulted before using hormone supplementation. Few side effects have been associated with topical progesterone creams, but can include skin reactions. Synthetic progestins have many well-known side effects, including the increase of LDL (bad) cholesterol and the decrease of HDL (good) cholesterol. Natural progesterone has been shown to have NO adverse effect on HDL cholesterol levels. Other side effects caused by synthetic progestins include bloating, breast soreness, depression, and mood swings. Studies have also shown an increase in the risk of heart attacks and breast cancer by those using synthetic progestins. Overall, natural progesterone is considerably safer than progestins and is therefore preferred by many doctors in situations where either would be effective.
