     A wicked myth has persisted for over a decade; spread by oncologists to their patients. Physicians have been telling those undergoing chemotherapy or radiation not to take antioxidants and other nutritional supplements because they interfere with treatment. Thankfully, a two-part article published in Alternative Therapies, attempts to show that this information is indeed a myth and not scientific fact.
     Oncologist, Charles Simone, M.D., and colleagues searched MEDLINE (the National Library of Medicine’s database of over 16 million medical journals dating back to the 1950’s) and the CANCERLIT (the National Cancer Institute’s database of articles related to cancer) and came up with 280 studies using dietary supplements while undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation.
     After careful review, Dr. Simone and his team found that antioxidants and other nutritional supplements did not interfere with these conventional cancer treatments and actually enhanced the killing effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy! Additionally they discovered that in over 47 published (human) studies, supplements were actually found to protect normal tissues and reduce the often-serious side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. And in 15 (human) studies, over 3700 patients actually had increased SURVIVAL RATES.
     Wondering, how did this harmful rumor start? Dr. Simone says this slant on supplements originated from an invalid statement made in a 1997 New York Times article by a physician from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital, who asserted that vitamin C interfered with chemotherapy and radiation (in humans). This statement was without a shred of scientific backing. Regrettably, without reviewing any evidence the entire oncology community adopted and continues to spread this grossly inaccurate and destructive information.
