Few of us
can forget the thirteen West Virginia coal miners buried 2 miles
underground for 41 hours. When they were found, only one, Randal
McCloy was rushed to West Virginia University Hospitals’ Intensive
Care Unit. The 27-year-old miner was practically dead, his other
twelve colleagues all perished from oxygen starvation.
Upon his arrival
at the hospital, his situation was grim. According to Jullian Balles,
M.D., the neuron surgeon assigned to Mr. McCloy’s case; McCloy was
in a coma and deep shock, his heart barely beating, one of his lungs
collapsed, his liver and both kidneys shut down. Even if he somehow
managed to survive, doctors prepared his family that he would be
severely brain damaged. The carbon monoxide levels he had been
exposed to had stripped the myelin sheath from most of his brain’s
neurons. “It’s very difficult to come back from a brain injury,”
says Dr. Balles. “There’s no drug that can help that.”
While McCloy was
being given daily oxygen infusions in a hyperbaric chamber, Dr.
Balles knew that wasn’t going to produce any miracles. He then
ordered a dose of 15,000 mg of docosahexaenoic acid and
eicosapentaenoic acid be given to the miner daily. In simpler
terms, Dr. Balles ordered doses of fish oil (the oily type high in
omega-3’s).
Several weeks
later, McCloy unexpectedly emerged from his coma. That in itself was
considered a medical miracle. But McCloy didn’t stop there. His
progress stunned even the most optimistic medical experts by
recovering his memory, then regaining his ability to walk, talk, and
see. By all accounts his turnaround was deemed by most in the
medical field a true ‘medical miracle’!
Although Dr.
Balles gives some credit to the hyperbaric chamber, he feels much of
the credit belongs elsewhere. “The omega-3’s help rebuild the
damaged gray and white matter of the brain,” says Dr. Balles,
who now takes his own medicine, swallowing an omega’3 oil supplement
daily. McCloy , on doctors orders, continues to take the supplements
daily. “I would say he should be on them for a lifetime,” says Dr.
Balles. “But then I think everyone should.”
If that isn’t
enough to jump start your engine and order OneLifeUSA’s
