Lycopene-
Lycopene is an open-chain unsaturated carotenoid that imparts red color to tomatoes. It is a proven anti-oxidant. In the body, lycopene is deposited into the liver, lungs, prostate gland, colon and skin. A six-year study conducted by Harvard Medical School, studied 47,000 men and evaluated 46 different fruits and vegetables. Only the tomato products (which contain large quantities of lycopene) showed a measurable ability to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Ongoing research suggests lycopene is associated with reduced risk of macular degeneration, and cancers of the lung, bladder, cervix and skin. |
