Saw Palmetto-
Saw Palmetto berries were once eaten by the Native North
Americans. Today their primary medicinal use is for an
enlarged prostate gland. It is thought of as a man's herb
and is prescribed for impotence and a reduced sex drive. Saw
Palmetto, when combined with horsetail has shown to be quite
effective.-
Pygeum Bark- Pygeum is an evergreen tree native
to Africa. Medical trials and research carried out in
France, established that Pygeum extract has positive effects
on the prostate gland. Specifically, it increases glandular
secretions and reduces levels of cholesterol within the
organ. In most Western countries surgery is the main option
for enlarged prostates, but in France, Pygeum is prescribed
in 81% of the cases.
Lycopene - Lycopene is an open-chain unsaturated
carotenoid that imparts red color to tomatoes. It is a
proven anti-oxidant. In the body, lycopene is deposited into
the liver, lungs, prostate gland, colon and skin. A six-year
study conducted by Harvard Medical School, studied 47,000
men and evaluated 46 different fruits and vegetables. Only
the tomato products (which contain large quantities of
lycopene) showed a measurable ability to reduce the risk of
prostate cancer. Ongoing research suggests lycopene is
associated with reduced risk of macular degeneration, and
cancers of the lung, bladder, cervix and skin.
Stinging Nettle
- Known for it's sting, this plant has been appreciated
for it's medicinal uses since the first century A.D. Recent
research conducted in the U.S., Germany, and Japan has
established it's medicinal value for benign prostate
enlargement. Stinging Nettle is also used for it's cleansing
and detoxifying properties.
Hawthorn Berry-
Hawthorn has been fairly well researched. It's main
medicinal benefit is due to it's bioflavanoid content. These
relax and dilate the arteries, especially the coronary
arteries. This increases blood flow to the heart and is
known to reduce symptoms of angina. A significant study in
1994 showed hawthorn improved heart rate and lowered blood
pressure.
Horsetail -
This herb has shown to be an excellent clotting agent.
It helps heal wounds, nosebleeds and has an astringent
effect in the genitourinary system. This proves valuable in
cases of cystitis, urethritis and prostate disease.
Horsetail is also known for speeding the repair of damaged
connective tissue.
Pumpkin Seed- Pumpkin seeds are known to be
mildly diuretic and have found to be useful for nephritis
and other urinary system problems. Because of this property,
they are also recommended in the early stages of prostate
problems.
