Melatonin - Melatonin is a natural hormone that regulates sleep. The production of melatonin varies according to the amount of light you are exposed to. You will produce more melatonin in a dark room as compared to when in a dimly lit room. It is also believed that as you age, your body produces less melatonin. Melatonin appears to be useful for those who have had their natural sleep cycle disrupted, perhaps from jet lag, or for those with insomnia or other sleep disorders.
Melatonin appears to cause drowsiness and decreased mental attention for about 2-6 hours after using it, and it may also impair balance. For this reason you should not drive or operate heavy machinery for several hours after taking melatonin.
